In order to stay in the spotlight, many celebrities have undergone plastic surgery.
Celebrities are under scrutiny to stay young; however, when a celebrity undergoes cosmetic surgery to improve or rejuvenate their looks, they often face tabloid attacks.  Some celebrities choose to hide their plastic surgery from the public in order to try to avoid the negative publicity that it often brings. The public wants to see beautiful, youthful looking celebrities, but tends to overlook the steps that many celebrities go through in order to maintain their looks. Because of the tabloid attacks, many celebrities keep their surgery to themselves, and the tabloids speculate on their surgery. An example of this is Ashlee Simpson. After slight changes in the shape of her nose, Ashlee Simpson was at the forefront of speculation as to whether or not she had undergone a nose augmentation. Although she did not publicly admit to it, tabloids featured pictures of her ‘new\' and ‘old\' nose.  Other celebrities take a different route. Some celebrities have appeared on television shows, in which their plastic surgery was broadcast to the masses. Typically, however, the celebrities willing to participate in this kind of show are not the A-list, movie star celebrities. They typically tend to be television stars or former child actors who are hoping to stimulate a rise in their fame by appearing on television in such a vulnerable manner.
The reaction to celebrity cosmetic surgery varies greatly depending on the celebrity. Some celebrities are celebrated for their plastic surgery, while others face criticism. Actress Pamela Anderson was viewed positively for her breast enhancements. When she had her implants removed after years of being on television, she was viewed somewhat negatively. Other actresses or actors face completely different reactions.
Male celebrities tend to be viewed more negatively for any cosmetic surgery that they endure. Bruce Jenner, a former Olympic athlete who turned into a televisions star, faced criticism due to surgery which tabloids claimed disfigured his face. Other male celebrities who have had plastic surgery have faced similar reactions to their changes.
Celebrities who have plastic surgery have surgery for a variety of reasons. The need to stay relevant and youthful to the public, however, is one of the main reasons for stars to endure the knife. Celebrities are willing to go to great lengths to keep their place in Hollywood. Even though they may be risking scrutiny from the tabloids, many celebrities are willing to take that risk.
